Birmingham is best known for its Civil Rights sights and musical heritage, but between live jazz and historic attractions catch the Birmingham Museum of Art or enjoy a detour through the city's botanical gardens.
These few miles of high elevation dirt roads are surrounded by woodland and sagebrush both. Go high enough, toward the 8,500 mark, and you may see some aspen groves. The Grand hogback is on one side, the Middle Rifle Creek below and the mountains are everywhere.

Basic Directions
Head north on Highway 13 for 2 miles, then take a right onto Highway 325.
Go to Rifle Gap Reservoir, take a left and continue for four miles on West Rifle Creek.
Look for a dirt road to your right. This climbs up Horse Mountain.
