Description

Visit the Barbour County Governors Trail, home to a concentration of Alabama leadership. Over the years, the county has produced six governors, including presidential candidate George C. Wallace. Rich with heritage, the county boasts grassroots leaders who have served Alabama and its people. Further, the history-laden area is framed by a beautiful, natural backdrop that offers fishing, boating, and picnicking.

To learn more about the Barbour County governors, visit the Shorter Mansion Museum in Eufaula. Eli and Wylena Shorter built the Neo-Classical Revival mansion in 1884. One of over 700 historic structures in the Seth Lore/Irwinton Historic District, the mansion is part of the greatest concentration of historic buildings in southeast Alabama. Stop by the Chamber of Commerce for a map to guide you on a walking or driving tour of the historic district.

At the end of the byway, visit Eufaula Lake, the bass fishing capital of the world. Fishing isn't all the area offers, though. Hike, golf, or picnic at Lakepoint State Park. Near Clio enjoy the shallow, natural pools at Blue Springs State Park. The whimsical, bright blue waters stand out in the regular landscape. Swim, picnic, or hike while you're here.

As a wellspring of local leadership, the Barbour County Governors Trail is a stop worth making. The short trail offers the visitor sweet touches with history and nature. It makes for a great weekend get-away for the entire family.
