Albany, Georgia Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Albany, Georgia has a long history of inhabitation. In fact, archaeological evidence shows that this area along the Flint River has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. When Spanish explorers arrived in the mid 1500s, they discovered people they called the Creek Indians were already living in the region. Albany was founded in 1836, and soon became a well-established place for trade.

The early 1900s were a difficult time for Albany. The tragic Flood of 1925, and The Great Depression took a toll on the community. In 1937 however, now famous Chehaw Park was built, and became an instant gathering place. Then in 1940, just as the community was making a turn for the better, a freak tornado visited the city and left 18 people dead. Albany's determined people rebuilt once again. Today, visitors will find Albany to be a city full of pride, and wonderfully diverse activities.

The city's historic downtown area offers a great variety of shopping, eating, historic buildings, and the lovely RiverFront Park. The park includes a well-maintained "great lawn," fountain, and a 1.5 mile trail system that make it a scenic rest-stop.

While in Albany, there's no reason to miss a visit to the unique Flint RiverQuarium. A stop here promises to be a truly one-of-a-kind adventure. The Flint RiverQuarium provides visitors insight into the Flint River, and its mysterious Blue-Hole springs. The 175,000 gallon open-air Blue Hole is home to the fish, reptiles and plants found in the Flint River's ecosystem. Another exciting adventure is waiting at The Parks at Chehaw. Here, guests can enjoy a 20-minute train ride through long-leaf pines, walk along scenic boardwalks that meander through cypress swamps, or hike miles of trails and enjoy the variety of plant and animal life found in the park's amazing six different ecosystems. The park also has excellent live animal exhibits, an incredible play area for children, and a dynamic Children's Farm.

Albany has a nice assortment of museums that beg to be visited. The Albany Museum of Art has six galleries that offer visitors many different styles, artists, and themes. There are shows by talented local artists, as well as collections from across the country. The Albany Civil Rights Movement Museum is an interesting and educational stop. The civil rights struggle is documented through the use of oral history, photographs, artifacts and exhibits. The Thronateeska Heritage Center, located in historic downtown, tells the human story of Albany and Southwest Georgia. Here, visitors will find The Museum of History, The Wetherbee Planetarium, and The Science Discovery Center waiting to be discovered.

Albany, Georgia is located in Southwest part of the state, about 80 miles southeast of Columbus, Georgia near Highway 19.
